Over a decade ago with my poor survival cancer prognosis, I turned to the study of hundreds of published university epidemiological studies hoping for a possible lifeline. This was eventually found in studies which demonstrated reduced disease risk and death rates in populations with highest intake of some, but not all dietary fibre. I was on my way.

This approach has been confirmed in the recent study by researchers at Sydney University’s Westmead Institute for Medical Research led by Professor Bamini Gopinath and which studied dietary records of 1,600 adults who were followed for ten years. The researchers found that those participants who had the highest intake of “indigestible” fibre had an 80% increased likelihood of living longer, fully-functional and disease-free compared with those who had the lowest intakes of this fibre. An amazing turnaround considering we have an 80% likelihood of having at least one chronic disease by age 65 years.The definition of disease-free included absence of chronic disease including cancer and coronary artery disease and dementia.

The challenge remained for me discover what is so important about this fibre, and would it successfully attenuate this critical pathway to age-related chronic disease? I was encouraged in this research to learn exactly this is so, as evidenced by the Westmead study, and others as well.

Why Indigestible Dietary Fibre? – The answer is in the wide-ranging health effects of BUTYRATE

Some fibre is “indigestible” to use Professor Gopinath’s term, meaning we have no enzymes in our upper GI tract which are able to digest this type of fibre so that it passes undigested directly to our large intestine where it is met by the many trillions of resident bacteria. Particular families of resident health-promoting bacteria selectively metabolise this particular fibre in a microbial fermentation process, producing key metabolites, particularly butyrate. In this fermentation process some gases are also produced which is a good indication that this process is working.

In the last decade multiple disease-fighting, beneficial effects of butyrate have increasingly been demonstrated. The health-promoting mechanisms of butyrate are wide-ranging, being one of the most extensively researched natural chemicals with over 300,000 published studies, and counting. And of great importance is the fact that our resident gut bacteria produce it for us – all we have to do is provide free accommodation and feed them the right kind of fibre.

Triggering the Pathway (1) Oxidative Stress

Turning back to where we began this critical pathway to age related chronic disease. How’s your memory? Can you remember the three steps in the pathway? Well the first is oxidative stress a condition developing from about our late forties and due mainly to the body’s fall in production of our principal antioxidant, glutathione. Butyrate actually increases our level of this key antioxidant, so tick the first box oxidative stress.

(2) Chronic Systemic Inflammation

Oxidative stress triggers chronic low-level systemic inflammation often referred to as ‘the silent killer’ slowly and asymptomatically, sometimes for decades, destroying cells, tissue and organs. However, butyrate our knight in shining armour, is shown in published university human and animal studies to block activation of the key regulator of systemic inflammation, nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB), as well as a range of proinflammatory cytokines A blood biomarker of systemic inflammation is C-reactive protein (CRP). We now know that this is not only an inflammatory biomarker but also a direct causal factor in vascular diseases playing a pivotal role in development of atherosclerosis from initial stages of development to eventual rupture of the unstable atherosclerotic plaque, perhaps leading to a heart attack or stroke. Butyrate is shown to reduce levels of CRP. Tick the second box – inflammation.

(3) Epigenetic DNA Chromatin Dysregulation

Probably the main cause of the growing interest in butyrate is because of its impact on epigenetic mechanisms leading to dysregulation of DNA chromatin. Butyrate as a DNA histone deacetylase inhibitor, is shown to have a chromatin protective role in effective prevention and therapy of different diseases ranging from genetic and metabolic conditions to neurological degenerative disorders. In fact therapeutic and preventive epigenetic regulation of gene expression is demonstrated in dementia, most cancers, atherosclerosis and heart disease, ischemic stroke, type 2 diabetes, immune dysfunction, arthritis and almost all age-related chronic diseases. Epigenetics with its gene-regulating mechanisms is probably one of the most exciting relatively new areas of medical research and we can expect some breakthrough developments in the years ahead as this research continues.
